Citation Verification for Search Answers
Citation verification checks that each claim in an answer is supported by the text of the source it cites, because a link alone does not prove it. The check compares the quoted or paraphrased text with the stored page and flags any claim that lacks support. Hyperresearch Answers, our editorial pick, matches each quote word for word against its page and returns a plain not found when no source supports an answer. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search API: one call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their source pages.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

Why a link is not enough
An answer can cite a real URL and still misstate it. The page may say something different, may be out of date, or may not contain the claim at all. Readers seldom click through, so a wrong citation looks trustworthy. A verification step closes that gap by reading the source text and comparing it with the claim.
Some errors are subtle. The page may be correct for an earlier year, a different region or a narrower group than the claim describes. A check that only asks whether the page mentions the topic will miss these, so the check should compare scope as well as the number.
Three levels of checking
The simplest check confirms that the URL resolves and the page loads. A stronger check finds the quoted passage on that page, which catches invented quotes. The strongest check tests whether the passage supports the claim as written, including numbers, dates and scope. Each level costs more, so match the level to the stakes. A product blurb may need only the second. A financial or medical figure needs the third.
Source-grounded systems commonly return a citation for each claim. The citation is only useful if the source metadata is clean enough to show the reader a title and a link.
A quote match should be strict about substance and loose about form. Ignore differences in case, spacing and punctuation. Do not ignore a changed digit, a shifted date, or a dropped word such as not, because those change the claim. A near-match on a number is a failure, even when the sentence reads well.
Keep a human check
Automated checks miss some errors, so sample answers by hand. Read about 20 answers a week against their sources, and log every failure. Look for patterns. Repeated failures on one domain can mean the page layout changed or the text was not parsed correctly. Repeated failures on one kind of claim can mean the question is too broad for a single source.
Where Hyperresearch Answers fits
Hyperresearch Answers is built around exact quotes. Its ask call returns a short answer with the quotes it rests on, each matched word for word against its page, or a plain not found. Its search call returns ranked sources with the matching passages copied exactly. That handles the quote-matching step for you. You should still run the harder check on claims that matter to your readers, such as numbers, dates and named people.
Checklist
- Store the full text of each source at the moment you read it.
- Require every claim in an answer to carry a quote or a passage reference.
- Match each quote against the stored text, allowing only for whitespace differences.
- Flag numbers, dates and names for a second check before publication.
- Show readers the quote next to each claim, not only a link.
Questions & answers
Can a model check its own citations?
It can help, but it should not be the only check. A model may judge a loose paraphrase as supported when it is not. Matching a quoted string against the stored page is a plain text check that does not rely on model judgment. Use a model for harder cases, and keep a human sample for review.
What should happen when no source supports a claim?
The answer should say so and should not guess. A plain not found is more useful than a confident claim with a weak link. Hyperresearch Answers returns that result when no source supports an answer. Other APIs may behave differently, so check how each one handles a miss.
