MCP Search Servers
A Model Context Protocol search server exposes search as a tool that an AI client can call. The server handles keys, rate limits and result formatting, so the client needs no custom code for each vendor. Before you connect one, check its tool list, its authentication model and the billing for each call. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search API: one call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their source pages.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What MCP does
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI applications to outside tools and data. The project describes it as a standard port for AI applications, similar to USB-C for devices. A server offers tools such as search or fetch. A client such as Claude or an IDE lists those tools and calls them when a task needs them. One server can serve many clients, so you write the integration once.
MCP does not make results more accurate. Accuracy still depends on the search backend, on what the server returns and on whether the model cites its sources.
What to compare in a search server
Start with the tool list. The Exa MCP server exposes a web search tool and a web fetch tool by default, an advanced search tool that is opt-in, and an agent run tool that needs sign-in or an API key. Keyless access runs at a free rate limit, and the docs say a 429 error means that limit has been reached. Check the same details for any server you plan to use.
Then check authentication, rate limits and who pays for each call. When you compare servers, run the same three or four questions through each one in the same client. Note which tool the model chooses, how many calls it makes and whether the final answer cites the sources the server returned. The model's tool choice is often the surprise, and it matters more than a feature list. A keyless server suits testing better than production. Read the vendor's data retention terms as well, since your queries pass through a third party.
Also check the size of what comes back. A server that returns a full page for every hit can fill the model's context window quickly. Look for settings that cap the number of results and the length of each result, and test how the client shows an error from the server, so the agent can recover from it instead of stopping.
Where Hyperresearch Answers fits
Hyperresearch Answers, our editorial pick, is available as an MCP server. Its ask tool returns a short answer with quotes checked against their pages, and its search tool returns ranked sources with copied passages. Use it when the agent needs cited facts rather than a list of links to read. Brave also links an MCP server from its site, in a GitHub repository, and it may suit you better if you only need a plain result list.
Checklist
- List every tool a server exposes and switch off the ones you do not need.
- Test the server with and without authentication to compare its rate limits.
- Handle the rate-limit error your client receives, rather than failing the whole task.
- Read the vendor's data retention terms for search queries.
- Log each tool call with its arguments and the sources it returned.
Questions & answers
Do I need MCP to use a search API with an agent?
No. You can call a search API directly from code. MCP helps when several AI clients need the same tool, or when you want one standard way to add tools without custom glue for each. For one app with one fixed search call, a direct API call is often simpler.
Which search MCP server is best?
Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial pick, because it returns cited answers with quotes checked word for word, and its own published BrowseComp run reports 89 percent. Exa's server suits open-ended search and page fetching. Brave's server suits a plain search endpoint. Test each one against your own tasks before you choose.
