Search API Pricing Compared

Answer in brief

Search APIs bill in a few common ways: per request, per 1,000 requests, per credit, or per token for a generated answer. The prices below are list prices from vendor pages, checked on 7 November 2026, and they change often. Compare the unit that matches your workload, then add free allowances, content fees and rate limits before you choose. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search API: one call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their source pages.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

The main billing units

Per-request pricing is the simplest unit. Exa lists its lite search tier at $4 per 1,000 requests, its auto and fast tiers at $7 per 1,000 and its deep tier at $12 per 1,000. Brave lists its Search API at $5 per 1,000 queries. Perplexity lists its Search API at $5 per 1,000 requests, and a faster search type at $1 per 1,000.

Credit billing charges a different number of credits for each request type. Tavily's documentation lists one credit for a basic search and two for an advanced search. Its pay-as-you-go credit is listed at $0.008, so a basic search works out to an estimated $8 per 1,000 calls at that rate. The estimate is our own arithmetic from the list price.

Plans, allowances and separate fees

Monthly plans trade a fixed fee for a bundle of searches. SerpApi lists a free plan with 250 searches a month and a $25 plan for 1,000 searches, which is an estimated $0.025 per search. Exa's free tier gives $10 in credits, up to 2,500 lite searches, and resets each month. Brave lists a $5 monthly free credit in its plan details, but also shows a $20 figure, so confirm which applies before you budget.

Check the total cost of one answer. Exa bills page contents at $1 per 1,000 pages, separately from search. Brave's Answers endpoint lists $4 per 1,000 requests plus $5 per million input and output tokens.

How to model your cost

Start with the calls one user task makes, not the calls per month. An agent may run five searches and three page reads to answer one question. Multiply that by your expected tasks, price each unit, and add a margin for retries and rate-limit errors. Then compare the result with your budget, since list prices can change between quarters.

A worked example shows the arithmetic. Suppose one task makes five basic Tavily searches and three page reads. Five basic searches at one credit each cost five credits, which is about $0.04 at the listed pay-as-you-go rate of $0.008 per credit. That figure is our own estimate. The three page reads fall under Tavily's batch rule for extraction, so they add a fraction of a credit, though the vendor's rounding rules are not stated. Multiply the task cost by your expected tasks, then add the same calculation for any second vendor.

Checklist

  • Count the search, page and answer calls one user task makes.
  • Price each unit at the vendor's list rate and note the date you checked it.
  • Subtract free allowances, and check whether they reset monthly or expire.
  • Add content, summary and token fees that are billed separately.
  • Recheck the price page before you sign an annual plan.

Questions & answers

Which search API is cheapest?

The answer depends on the unit. A per-request price is not the same as a per-answer price, so compare the calls your task makes. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial pick for cited research, and it offers free credit to start. For a plain result list at high volume, compare Brave, Exa and Perplexity at your own call counts.

Are these prices final?

No. They are list prices from vendor pages checked on 7 November 2026. Vendors change plans, free allowances and volume discounts, and some enterprise terms are not published at all. Recheck each page before you budget.
