Web Scraping vs Search API

Answer in brief

A search API finds pages that match a query and returns their content or passages. A scraping API takes a URL you already have and returns that page, often rendered and cleaned. Use search when you do not yet know the sources, and scraping when you know the page you need, often in that order. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search API: one call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their source pages.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

Two different jobs

Search answers the question of which pages to read. Scraping answers the question of what is on a given page. A scraping API handles fetching, rendering and often cleaning the HTML, and it usually bills per page. Firecrawl lists scrape and crawl at one credit per page, with four more credits per page when you ask for JSON output. Its free plan includes 1,000 credits a month.

Search APIs bill per query, while scrapers bill per page. A single search call returns several candidate sources, so the cost per useful source can be lower when you need many options. A scraper returns the full page for one known URL.

Cost and units

Credit billing mixes the two jobs. Tavily charges one credit for a basic search and two for an advanced search. Its extract endpoint charges one credit for every five successful URL extractions at basic depth, and two credits per five at advanced depth. Failed extractions are not charged. Compare the units on the same workload, not the headline price.

Count the pages your agent actually reads. Many agents search widely and then read only two or three pages, so the page-read cost is often the smaller line item.

Check whether the page you need is rendered. Many sites build their content with JavaScript, so a plain request can return an almost empty shell. Test a sample of target pages before you commit to a large volume, and count how many return the text you need. A scraper that bills for empty pages costs more than its list price suggests.

Rules that apply to both

Read the target site's terms and its robots rules before you scrape at scale. The SEC's own access page, for example, asks automated users to declare a user agent and says it does not allow botnets or automated tools to crawl its site. Keep request rates modest, identify your client where the site asks you to, and log what you fetch and why.

Pace your requests per host. A few pages a minute rarely causes trouble, while a burst of parallel requests to one site can look like an attack and get your client blocked. If a site offers a documented data feed or API, prefer it, because it is usually cheaper and more stable than parsing its pages.

Checklist

  • List the URLs you already know and the ones you still have to discover.
  • Use search to discover sources and a scraper to read the pages you have chosen.
  • Price a month of each at your expected volume, using the vendor's own unit.
  • Check the target site's terms and robots rules before you scrape it.
  • Declare a user agent and set a request rate limit in your client.

Questions & answers

Is web scraping legal?

That depends on the site, the data, the jurisdiction and how you use the result. This site cannot give legal advice. Read each site's terms, check its robots rules, and ask a lawyer before any commercial use.

Why pay for a scraping API instead of running my own crawler?

A scraping API handles proxies, rendering and retries for you, at a per-page price. A crawler you run yourself costs engineering time and infrastructure. Compare the full cost of both at your expected volume before you decide.
