Grounding

Answer in brief

Grounding ties a model's answer to retrieved sources that the answer can be checked against.

What it means

Grounding means connecting a model's answer to retrieved sources, so each claim can be traced back to a document. A grounded answer usually includes citations or quotes that a reader can check. Without grounding, a model can produce fluent text that no source supports.

Grounding is a property of the whole system, not only the search call. The API must return text that actually contains the claim, the model must use that text, and the app must show the link. Microsoft's Grounding with Bing Search follows this pattern, but it does not give developers the raw results, and its terms set how the links must be displayed. When you evaluate a search API for grounding, test whether each cited sentence appears on the cited page.
