SERP API

Answer in brief

A SERP API returns a search engine's results page as structured data.

What it means

A SERP API is a hosted service that runs a query on a search engine, usually Google or Bing, and returns the results page as JSON. Each result comes back as fields such as title, link and snippet, and sometimes as rich results or local listings. Teams use these APIs for rank tracking, competitor monitoring, lead lists and any job that needs the list of links a person would see. SerpApi is one example, with a free plan of 250 searches a month and paid plans priced per search.

A SERP API usually does not read the pages behind the links. If a model needs the text of those pages, add a scrape or fetch step, or use an AI search API that returns passages. Google's Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers, so many teams now compare SerpApi and similar providers for result data. Check each provider's terms before you store or display results.
