Web index

Answer in brief

A web index is the stored collection of pages and documents that a search system ranks and returns.

What it means

A web index is the stored collection of web pages, documents and metadata that a search system uses to find and rank results. Building one means crawling pages, parsing them, removing duplicates and keeping the store fresh. Large search engines run very large indexes. Smaller search APIs may run their own index, license one from another provider, or query a search engine and apply their own ranking.

Coverage matters. A provider with strong news coverage may be weak on academic papers, government filings or niche forums. Freshness matters too: a page crawled last month can miss a price change made yesterday. When you compare search APIs, ask which index they use, how often it updates, and whether it covers the sources your research depends on. Hyperresearch Answers searches the open web plus 90+ structured sources, including SEC EDGAR filings.
